Doctors often use antidepressants to manage the depression, anxiety and agitation that accompanies a diagnosis of dementia. Now, a new study suggests the use of antidepressants may hasten the cognitive decline of people with dementia. Antidepressants called SSRIs can treat a variety of mental health conditions. The Trump administration, which has announced that the drugs will be newly scrutinized, is seeking to evaluate how these medications affect children in particular.

Depressants affect GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter that slows down activity in the brain. When severe, CNS depression caused by substances such as opioids, alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and sleeping medications can be fatal. Clients should be advised that if they get out of bed unassisted within 8 hours of receiving lorazepam, they risk falling and potentially sustaining injury. Elderly clients should be instructed that lorazepam injection may make them very sleepy for a period longer than 6 to 8 hours following surgery. In addition to examining any dementias, we separately examined the effects for different subtypes of dementia (AD and mixed, VaD, LBD, FTD, and other dementias). For patients diagnosed with AD, mixed dementia, and LBD, we further adjusted for ChEIs and memantine.

More than 10 percent of U.S. adults took antidepressants over the previous 30 days, data from 2015 to 2018 show.
